Welcome to the new Special Interest Group (SIG) on Fire Engineering and Sustainability. As International President of the Institution for the year 2010/11, I have chosen this subject as my theme of the year.

It is a very good time to set up this SIG, as sustainable development is part of many national government initiatives across the world. At the same time, it is clear that fire engineering is not as embedded in such initiatives as we professionals would like to see.

Therefore, I hope that many IFE members and others will join the SIG, share ideas and help influence decision makers.

I look forward to a very stimulating and productive SIG.

Welcome to the Fire Engineering and Sustainability blog site

Our aims and objectives:
  • to monitor sustainability driven developments in the built environment
  • to encourage professional discussion and debate
  • to share best practices globally
  • to support and develop guides and standards
  • to influence decision makers in all aspects of building (design, construction and management) about fire engineering issues
Scope:
  • sustainable building construction materials, their uses and behaviour in fire
  • the effects of sustainable construction techniques (including Modern Methods of Construction - MCC) on fire growth
  • behaviour of sustainable buildings in fire
  • the fire risks and fire performance of innovative/sustainable systems and equipment in, on and around buildings
  • fire prevention and protection
  • requirements for effective fire & rescue service's actions
  • building management constraints to reduce risk of fire
  • sustainability developments in transport and its impact in fire safety
